University of California UC-AFT represents over 3,000 lecturers at the 10 campuses of the University of California. Approximately one-third of all lecturers teach full-time. Part-time and full-time lecturers are paid on the same salary scale, with job security, though not tenure, after 6 years. Lecturers teaching at or above 50% FTE have full health and retirement benefits. A full-time teaching load for a UC lecturer is normally 9 courses at a campus on the quarter system or 6 courses at a campus on the semester system, with adjustments in FTE for more intensive writing and language classes. Minimum full-time starting salary has just been raised to $42,074 per year with the October 2007 contract ratification.
