Many lecturers and part-time instructors don't know much about the national history of contingent faculty organizing in the last decade. Why would we would spend our own scarce time and resources to learn about and work with our colleagues in other institutions and other unions? Why should tenure faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates care about lecturers and part-time instructors? Because the exploitation of any class of faculty in California undermines the power and professionalism of all faculty, and hence the fundamental principles of academic freedom, shared governance, and student access to excellent instruction.
Our
first project is this May 3 conference at the UC Berkeley Faculty Club to begin
thinking collectively about the challenges we face and the possibility of a
collective response. We’ll have brief presentations by panelists,
followed by discussion with the audience. If
this event is successful, we may organize a followup conference for CEW in
October. All members of our campus
communities are welcome.

Directions
From the 580/80 freeway, take the University Avenue exit and go east on University until it ends at the entrance to campus. Turn left on Oxford (Fulton), then right on Hearst (you're going around the perimeter of the campus). Make a right onto Gayley Road. Pass Haas School Of Business &
make the first right turn onto Haas Access Svc. Rd. Make a left into the Boalt lot. *** Signage is posted at the entrance to the lot. Alternate route: From University, turn right on Oxford, then left on Durant or on Channing, then go several blocks (you'll cross Telegraph and College), and turn left on Piedmont Ave. Pass International House (on the right) at the corner of Bancroft Way/Piedmont Ave. Make a U-turn just before stop sign. Make an immediate right onto Haas Access Svc. Rd. Make a left into the Boalt Lot.
Reserved parking on campus will cost $6 per vehicle. We've reserved 40 spaces. First come, first serve. If the lot is full, there should be parking in the lots and garages on Bancroft, Durant, Channing, Oxford, and Hearst, but it will be more expensive. (Street parking is metered close to the campus, and so impractical for an all day event.)
We couldn't get parking in the Faculty Club parking lot, so you'll have to walk a little to get to the Faculty Club. Here are URLs to the campus map-a smaller section and the whole map. http://www.berkeley.edu/map/maps/CDEF567.html http://www.berkeley.edu/map/maps/large_map.html If you get lost, call Michelle at 510 384-6727.
